ReadEra alternative
GemReader vs ReadEra · Android · Updated September 2026
The short answer
GemReader is a free Android EPUB and PDF reader built for studying. Choose it over ReadEra if you read to learn: highlights become a spaced-repetition flashcard deck, answers typed into interactive workbooks are saved, Anki decks import, and read-aloud and a library-wide list of every highlight are free rather than part of a Premium upgrade.
Stay on ReadEra if you need Word, DjVu, FB2, TXT or CHM files, want the app to find every book already on your phone without importing, or want Google Drive sync (a ReadEra Premium feature). As a free, no-ads reader for every format, ReadEra is hard to beat.
Why people look for a ReadEra alternative
ReadEra has no ads and no purchases in its free app, so the reasons are rarely price. They are features. Background read-aloud, Google Drive sync and the section that collects quotes from every book all sit in ReadEra Premium, a separate paid app. And ReadEra treats a highlight as a quote to keep, not something to study.
GemReader starts from the other end. Every highlight and note is a card on a Review page, scheduled by spaced repetition, and the whole library's highlights sit in one searchable, taggable list. Read-aloud works on any book, with lock-screen controls. None of it has a paid tier to unlock.

Where ReadEra is still better
- Formats. Word documents (DOC, DOCX, RTF), ODT, DjVu, FB2, TXT and CHM all open in ReadEra. GemReader opens EPUB, PDF, MOBI, AZW, AZW3 and CBZ and nothing else.
- No importing. ReadEra finds every book and document already on the phone and reads it where it sits, grouped by author and series. GemReader keeps its own encrypted copy of each book, which takes an import step and the storage to go with it.
- Sync, if you pay. ReadEra Premium keeps books, reading position and quotes in step across devices through Google Drive. GemReader has no cloud at all; Gem Beam moves a library between two devices over local Wi-Fi, once.
- iPhone today. ReadEra already has an iOS app; GemReader's is still in testing.
What GemReader does that ReadEra doesn’t
- Highlights become flashcards. Every highlight and note is a card on a built-in spaced-repetition Review page. Existing Anki decks (.apkg, .txt) import and drill alongside them.
- Workbooks that remember. Text fields, checkboxes and selects inside an EPUB 3 workbook are saved automatically and survive closing the app.
- No upgrade to unlock. Read-aloud with lock-screen controls, six highlight colours, and one searchable list of every highlight and note in the library are all in the free app, because there is no other app.
- Free books in-app. Project Gutenberg, Standard Ebooks and Wolne Lektury are browsable and downloadable without leaving the reader.
- Encrypted library. Every book is AES-256 encrypted on import and decrypted only in memory. PIN-locked folders hide sensitive reading and wipe their keys after three wrong guesses.
Switching from ReadEra
ReadEra never moved your books, so they are still where you downloaded them — usually Downloads or a Books folder. Install GemReader and import them from there; GemReader encrypts its own copy and leaves the originals alone, so ReadEra keeps working while you try both. Not sure whether a file will open? Drop it into the free Book Checker first; it flags DRM and corrupt containers in your browser without uploading anything.
Quotes and notes made in ReadEra stay in ReadEra. There is no importer for them, so keep the app until you have re-marked what matters.
Questions people ask
If you read to study — textbooks, language material, lecture PDFs — yes: highlights become a spaced-repetition deck, workbook answers are saved, Anki decks import, and read-aloud is free. If you need Word, DjVu, FB2 or TXT files, or want the reader to pick up every book on your phone without importing, ReadEra remains the better fit.
ReadEra is a general-purpose reader and file manager with a paid Premium app for sync, background read-aloud and a library-wide quote list. GemReader is a study reader with no paid tier at all: flashcards from highlights, saved workbook answers, read-aloud and a library-wide highlight list are all in the one free app.
Your book files, yes — ReadEra reads them in place, so import the EPUB, PDF, MOBI or AZW3 files from the same folders. Quotes, notes and reading positions do not transfer.
Not through the cloud. GemReader has no account and no server. To move to a second phone or tablet, use Gem Beam: the two devices connect directly over Wi-Fi and the whole library — books, highlights, notes, reading position and study progress — is sent across encrypted. It is a one-time transfer, not continuous sync.
GemReader. It was built for that use: interactive workbook answers are saved automatically, six highlight colours with typed notes become a flashcard deck on a Review page, existing Anki decks import, and lecture PDFs live in the same library as the EPUBs.
The reader built for studying
Textbooks, lecture PDFs and workbooks in one library. Highlight as you read, then study those highlights as flashcards — without exporting anything or leaving the app. Free, no ads, no account.
